Could You Repeat That?

I admit, there are times I'm guilty of not giving you my full, undivided attention. I could be washing the dishes, or driving, or anything else. I'm only half-listening to what you're saying until something I hear doesn't make any sense.

I must've misheard the first or the last part of what you were saying.  So what do I do? I ask "What did you say?". This is where the you're is supposed to repeat what you've said so we can move on with our lives. But no. You've only repeated the part that I did hear.

Most of the time, it will play out like this:

[ I'm loading the dishwasher ]

Lauren:  I was going to get my nails done, but I decided to do them myself.

[ What I hear is "I was going to get pigtails done, but I decided to do them myself." Lauren has never, ever sported pigtails so I'm sure I misheard her ]

Me:  What did you say?

Lauren:  I decided to do them myself.

Me:  What?

Lauren:  I saaaaid… I decided to do them myself.

[ she says as she shakes her head and rolls her eyes at me ]

Me:  No.  What did you say before that?

Lauren:  Huh?

Me:  Ugh.  I heard the last part, sheesh… "decided to do what yourself?!"

And what happens next? Well, she looks at me, with that oh-mom-you're-gettin'-old look, and shakes her head again. What the hell?!

This happens to me a lot. Okay. Fine. I didn't hear what you said. But when I ask you to repeat what you've said, why did you only repeat the half that I heard? And then you look at me like I'm the crazy one?

Does this happen to you too? Please tell me I'm not alone. Am I crazy? Is my hearing shot?

Oh yes, this is adult ADD..and I am with you. I have about a million and one things going on in my head and when you try to sneak something in there on me ..well, I am a bit distracted. I am guilty of half-listening. I do not usually ask for a repeat though, I just “uh hunh” my way through it. I have yet to be caught.
